PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION IN PRAGUE AND HOW TO USE IT WITHOUT PROBLEMS:
Operators are not equipped (nor allowed) to take fares directly from passengers. Tickets must be purchased and time-stamped at convenient machines located on buses and trams (yellow box) and at the entrance to Metro escalators.
DO NOT RIDE WITHOUT A TICKET. Random on-board checks are carried out by inspectors who can (and will) levy a very heavy fine on the spot. They are attracted to those speaking a foreign language, studying maps or generally looking confused--because that's where the money is--you and your companion. A 500 or 1000 crown fine (each) can make a large hole in a travel budget and ruin your Prague experience.
Tickets for trams and buses are available at most Tabaks (cigarette and magazine shops). Metro entrances have coin machines. The same ticket is good for all transport, but only for a single trip.
